With the aim of promoting and supporting the strengthening of the region’s social development policies, as well as boosting cooperation and the exchange of experiences among countries, the Regional Conference on Social Development in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place on November 2-4, 2015 in Lima, Peru.

The event, which will be held at Lima’s Conventions Center, is convened by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Government of Peru and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The Regional Conference on Social Development was created in 2014 during ECLAC’s last session, held in the Peruvian capital. Some of the attendants include ministers and other authorities of the regional organization’s member States and associate members, besides international officials and representatives of the civil society.

The position document Inclusive Social Development: A New Generation of Policies for Overcoming Poverty and Inequality will be presented at the conference. The document analyzes recent progress and challenges which persist in the region in that area. The report examines the factors explaining recorded achievements, challenges that continue and offers recommendations regarding public policies.

The works during the conference will be divided into five tables. The first one will address the elements of success and pending challenges in terms of poverty, social inclusion and inequality. The second will refer to macroeconomics and taxation for an inclusive social development, the third will discuss the progress made in terms of the role of social institutions in the region, the fourth will consider the main focus and strategies of the new generation of social policies. At the fifth, countries will discuss proposals on progressing in the understanding and measurement of multidimensional poverty.

The event also has amongst its goals the provision of technical supplies to different regional forums, as well as to contribute, from a Latin American perspective, to the debate of the United Nations Commission for Social Development.
